Hair dos and how-tos

Reminiscing about Australian fashion week? The overload of new trends, new hair and makeup looks and general have-to-have-it-now newness of everything can be a lot to absorb. It’s not until we have a chance to digest it all that those key aspects come out.

Oscar Oscar salons have been digesting – they’ve finished their main meal and they’re probably on to coffee and a cheese plate actually because the team has whittled down the key trends into a series of styles they’re taking on the road for these VIP nights. A $20 ticket gets you access to a two-hour how-to on the latest styles, and you can redeem it on product on the night.

I can’t see myself trying the stick-on plastic eyebrows from the Romance was Born show, but the punkish coif, why yes I would, if only I had the know-how.

Last-minute Mother’s Day gifts

Mother’s Day on Sunday – are you prepared?

I wrote a blog for another site last week saying basically, if you found it hard to buy for your mum, you clearly weren’t giving it a lot of thought. Does she like to cook (really like to cook, not just out of obligation…)? – Pick her up some Masterchef paraphernalia (cook books and the like – Manu Feildel has just released a new one). Does she like to read? Look up the best seller list and take your pick. Is she into fashion? Don’t even get me started… the possibilities…

I’ve put together a little top 5 of my gift ideas for mum, including, you’ll note, a personal style session with me at Westfield Chermside. I can’t tell you enough how much people enjoy (especially mums) a little focus on themselves during the style sessions I run at Chermside. For two hours (there’s an option to book one hour or more than two if you like but two is a good amount of time), I talk through body shape and how to dress for it, then we go shopping together and find pieces to work into your lifestyle, budget, shape and style. It’s a lot of fun and a great treat for mum. At the moment when you book a 2hr style session you receive a $100 gift voucher as well – book online here.

Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday, mums xx

Meanwhile, back in Brisbane

The fashion focus was firmly on Sydney last week. In the aftermath, there’s plenty more to talk about here including Brisbane designers Tovah Cottle and Samantha Ashton & Chantelle Cox (Ash to Gold)’s beautiful Australian fashion week runway debuts, the fun Nat-Sui shoes/Sara Phillips collaboration and more.

In the mean time though, it’s back to what’s happening locally in Brisbane – i.e., a lot. I’m currently working on an opinion piece for an online mag about the state of Brisbane’s fashion offerings. Early thoughts tempt me to categorise this in terms of our high end retailers, what’s happening in our Westfield centres (of which I’m particularly familiar thanks to my role as a Westfield stylist), and with our local designers (who I love to keep up with and have gotten to know quite well thanks to years covering their goings on through the media). All are fighting the economic climate and reinventing themselves to ensure their long-term survival.

In the past few weeks, the new and improved Wintergarden centre has been unveiled, including glamorous store launches by Coach and Mecca Cosmetica as well as a centre-wide soiree. The James St and Ann St precincts have again been in the spotlight – numerous designers of their being showcased on the national stage at fashion week. Luxury retailer Jean Brown has launched a beautiful new online store.

I’m all the more inspired to write of the leaps and bounds Brisbane is taking again at the moment having returned from fashion week in Sydney where I could well and truly say to my interstate contemporaries that Brisbane really has a lot going on in fashion. Those at the Scanlan & Theodore autumn/winter collection in-store launch a couple of weeks ago (I’ve been meaning to post a couple of lovely pics, just catching up), will attest to this – the party was packed. Don’t you feel good about where we are?

MBFWA days two and three

It’s fashion week hump day and not only does that mean that all those tired feet need a whole lot of TLC to make it through til Friday but also, the day we can start to make sense of the strongest trends for spring.summer 2012/13 and who will deliver them best if you choose to buy Australian.

Here’s a rundown as I see it:

Prints

This winter, the mixed prints trends is one of my favourites – fresh and creative, it’s endless fun. Great news then, that it’s not going anywhere come summer. Prints are sticking around in the form of florals and abstract botanicals and I couldn’t be happier.

Peplums

Another trend straight from the international runways, peplums are all over Australian fashion week. Not only fun and flirty, peplums are a great tool to add shape to a boyish frame or emphasise your God-given curves if that’s what you’re working with.

Spots

A more subtle link but a trend none-the-less, designers are carrying over fashion’s current love affair with polkadots and interpreting it in their own way – a print at Gary Bigeni, laser-cut pattern at Zimmerman, and the ideal motif to carry through the cartoon inspiration from Romance Was Born.

Sparkle

Who doesn’t love a bit of gold in their wardrobe. The chink-chink of a couple of Johanna Johnson’s flawless gowns as they passed was incredible. I couldn’t find images online of my favourites and the only ones I snapped are embarrassingly blurry but below is an equally beautiful example in lace.

Pastels, or is it brights?

Either way you look at it, if you choose to buy into what will be the overwhelming pastels trend come spring/summer, or you stick to neon brights, there’s plenty of colour to be had.

Images: With thanks to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Now, I personally think it’s a little vulgar to rave about goodie bag inclusions but special mention goes to this little one I scored at Alice McCall. Not that the OPI polishes, Redken hair sprays and other various goodies I’ve picked up along the way this week haven’t been appreciated, but this cracked me up a little bit. Someone knows what it takes to get through fashion week with a smile on your face.

MBFWA day one

What a lively start to fashion week. I don’t fly in until tomorrow morning so I’m slightly behind the 8 ball this week but something tells me I’d better have plenty of coffee in the morning in order to keep up.

As if fashion week wasn’t lively enough, Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales’ Romance Was Born show this morning gave it a little extra Shazzam! Kappow! and all those other comic-bookie words. Kind of makes me want clown red hair.

Speaking of clowns, representing Brisbane designers today was Gail Reid whose Gail Sorronda collection was heavy on the clown inspiration. For a designer notorious for her monochromatic colour ways, this was a huge departure. I do love the 1920s silhouettes and quirky accessories though.

Another highlight from day 1 have to be Gary Bigeni. These gorgeous colours of blues and aquamarine toned down with mustard and browns are so chic. It’s good to know next summer will still be full of colour – albeit in a more refined way than we saw last season.

Also on the highlight reel today I have to include a shot from Camilla, who is just going from strength to strength. I do love a little Asian inspiration and this collection is just incredible. Franks has upped the ante recently, introducing more tailored pieces into her collections to advance her reputation as the kaftan queen even further.

Still to come on the schedule this evening are Aurelio Costarella (always amazing and glamorous), Whitney Eve, Ksubi and Ginger & Smart. I’ll be up bright and early in the morning to get into town for the first of tomorrow’s shows, one highlight of which will be Talulah, some more home-grown talent. Stay tuned.

Jean Brown’s Paris travel diary

Gearing up for Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week Australia next week, I was chatting to Jean Brown boutique’s general manager Joshua Jones about what shows I’d be seeing, what I was looking forward to and so on. Soon the conversation turned to Josh’s recent return to Paris and hey presto, I was trumped!

Luckily, Josh is more than happy to share and always has a camera close to hand during his trips. So for us, this means an envy-worthy insight into his Paris Fashion Week experiences. Here’s PFW, in Josh’s own words.

Colour was the talk of the streets, even in the cold weather people pulled out anything that was bright! Paris really was the city of lights… and brights, during PFW!

McQueen Parade. Volume and romance was the look at McQueen in an intimate setting this parade was a magical dream of heavenly fabrics and the dress that most people dream of owning!

Nina Ricci Parade, which showed the romance that you will see in the coming seasons, as well as the amazing fabrics that they are renowned for.

Chloe Parade. This had a great play with the volume trend coming up. The Chloe parades are always a hustle and so busy, which makes the energy electric! The season was no different and the collection was such a nice play on the new evolution of Chloe with the classic Chloe elements not being lost.

Anya Hindmarch Showroom, with modules from her first ‘Runway Parade’ at London Fashion Week. The video is amazing and it is one of her best collections!

The Lanvin 10th Birthday, in celebration of Alber Elbaz being at Lanvin 10 years, was the party to get an invite to at PFW. Celebrities and the coolest Parisians danced the night away under falling glitter. It was a magical party and a night to remember!

Thanks for sharing, Josh!

Fashion Week approaches

It’s about two weeks until Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney. Time for rsvps, booking flights, general organisation. I’ll be popping in for a few days around my schedule up here in Brisbane and of course I won’t be the only Qlder flying south for the spring/summer shows.

Flying the flag for Brisbane this year are a lovely bunch of ladies who hail from the sunny state, namely Gail Reid whose label Gail Sorronda will show on Monday April 30 at 11am. Following Gail on Monday afternoon at 4pm is former Brisbane girl Courtney Meyer’s label Miss Unkon.

On Tuesday I’m looking forward to Talulah, a label that will always call Brisbane home even though the lovely Kelli Wharton and husband Bradley Lloyd now get to gaze out at the waters off Byron Bay every day.

Thursday’s schedule brings some first-timers into the mix, namely Tovah Cottle and former Brisbane stylist Rachel Sinclair whose co-designed label Kahlo will also show in the new generation show at 10am.

I’m also super excited for the Ash to Gold girls, showing in the second new generation show on Friday at 2pm.

Our designers have a big responsibility on their shoulders – not only to boost their own brands but to help reignite some excitement in our annual national fashion showcase after the drop-out of a couple of Australia’s biggest names in fashion from the schedule this week. Dion Lee and Josh Goot have come to be two of the most anticipated designers on the fashion week calendar so their withdrawal on Monday put a dampener on this year’s event and echoed the thoughts of many regarding the awkward timing for buyers of Australia’s fashion week, slotted between the international spring/summer buying season and resort season in June.

Fashion week is an exhausting but exciting event and if you want to see it all first hand, Oscar Oscar are offering someone the opportunity. Your chance to join the ranks of the new media trailblazers (the bloggers) is below – enter Oscar Oscar’s beauty blogger competition by next Wednesday and you could be off to enjoy the Bec + Bridge show in Sydney!

More success for Soot

I’ve been a fan of Soot’s Edwina Sinclair ever since I met her as a 18-year-old emerging designer. She’s amazed the Brisbane fashion scene not only with her dedication to her passion but her business acumen and determination. Edwina even made the front page of the Courier-Mail last year in a story I wrote on her success. Fashion on the front page?!?! Momentous.

Now 20, this young designer is now looking back on a year in her own James St boutique, several successful collections under her belt, and all before she graduates uni.

I was looking through the latest Soot collection (The High Tea Collection) recently and fell in love with these gorgeous colours, sheer fabrics, great prints and this very eye-catching scenery that set the stage for the look book shoot. Had to hear all about it. Edwina shares her thoughts below.

Q: What was your inspiration for the high tea collection?
A: I was in Japan for 3 weeks over Christmas and just love the kimono. I wanted to bring it into the collection in some way without the style of the collection being too oriental so I exaggerated the sleeves of some pieces into a kimono style. To contrast with the french navy 100% Australian Merino wool fabric that I was using I wanted a busy, bright print so I digitally printed a photograph taken at the ‘Tea Cup ride’ in Euro Disney onto fabric so I guess travelling inspired this collection.

Q: It’s great to see some colour in a winter collection. Is that something your customer looks for?
A: The feedback from my customers is that they love the custom digitally printed fabric as it is unique to SOOT and with only small production it is limited. My target market of teenager to mid 20′s seem to like a pop of colour to put with basics. The digital print in this collection is a photograph taken by photographer Lily Slater of the teacup ride in motion at Euro Disney.

Q: How has Soot evolved since you opened the store in the Valley?
A: The store has been open for just over a year now and having a shopfront in a fashion precinct like James Street has certainly made a lot more people aware of the SOOT brand. I love that I can get instant feedback from customers in store at this point in time while I am still a full time uni student I do not have enough time to deidicate to taking SOOT to a bigger market but that is certainly my future goal.

Q: Where did you shoot the collection and can you tell me a bit about how you ran the shoot day?
A: The location for the shoot was in the forest on the way to the Sunshine Coast. The morning dawned with torrential rain so I had to push makeup, hair and the start time back a couple of hours. It was then a case of cross my fingers that the weather would clear. On arriving at the location the rain stopped, the photographer set up, the model dressed and we started. Shooting on a road was challenging as we had to move the so at this point off the road each time a car came by – luckily it was not a really busy road. The sun did not appear at all but the rain held off until the last shot! I styled the shoot and the model was such a trooper – changing in the open air behind a car with a mosquito plague attacking. It was a challenging shoot however I am really happy with the images.

Napoleon goes nude

Traditionally, we associate winter makeup with deep, dark tones – a burgundy lip, rich browns and mushroom colours for the eyes, a strong brow. While that look will take you far this winter, there’s a more subtle inspiration to hand and that comes from the makeup man himself, Napoleon Perdis.

I caught up with Napoleon at David Jones recently and, despite the intimidating prospect of sitting down with a man whose makeup was far better than mine, took the opportunity to get the low-down on what the new Napoleon Nude Bar collection is all about.

Skipping the traditional winter palette and opting for more nude tones is a fashion-forward approach to current beauty trends, says Napoleon. It’s all about that barely-made-up look, that is in fact quite ingeniously done to ensure the complexion is flawless, the face has structure and everything is lifted and enhanced.

Of course primer is the first, and in Napoleon’s book one of the most vital, steps. Primer will hydrate your face and prepare it for long-lasting makeup. (Do you know Napoleon also told me he uses Auto Pilot primer through his hair as a conditioner and gloss serum. Love it.)

Next, try the new Napoleon Off Duty Tinted Moisturiser ($48). it comes in three shades and gives the skin a nice natural glow for the days you don’t want to wear foundation. It also doubles as a pre-foundation base.

Highlight the v-shape under the eye with concealer, then lightly dust with Camera Finish powder to mattify the face.

Apply lots of mascara and create structure through your brows by combing through and filling in with an eyebrow pencil.

Opt for a neutral shade on the eyes – fair to medium skin tones should look for a highlight shade, dark skin tones a contour shade.

Get your hands on the Ultimate Contour Palette for your cheeks – this palette’s become a favourite of mine because it has highlight and contour shades as well as a flush of colour for the cheeks. Makes contouring a cinch.

Finally, coat the lips in one of the new Luminous Lip Veils. Pretty in Peach suits pretty much all skin tones and is just the subtlest hint of colour.

Extra tips:

* If you have fair skin, avoid beige and taupe as they’ll wash you out. Instead, look to peach, apricot or pinks

* If you have yellow undertones in your skin, go for a creamy-toned beige like latte or mocha

* For a ‘red carpet’ nude look, flick liner along the upper lash line and smudge towards the inner corner of the eye

* The new Double Aagent Nude Lip Palette can be used for either a creamy or matte lip finish and doubles as a creamy cheek colour

Stay Up Late tonight and meet Camilla Franks

I remember last year’s James St Up Late – it was rainy and a bit miserable but that didn’t stop huge crowds turning out for the event.

This time around, James St partners with Marie Claire and tonight, you can be guaranteed not only of a great atmosphere in James St, which will be transformed into a street party with goodies galore, but some pretty great sales and incentives from every store taking part. A few I’ve been given the heads-up about are wood fired pizza tastings at Taste between 6-8pm, gifts with purchases at Boo Radley, Caterpillar, Calexico and Chelsea de Luca and 20 % off or more at Gary Castles, French Connection, Frockshop, Gail Sorronda, Jules & Roc and more.

There’ll also be a host of designers in their boutiques including Gail Reid of Gail Sorronda, Chelsea de Luca, Kelli Wharton of Talulah will be at Ellia and Camilla Franks will host her soiree at the new and very vibrant Camilla boutique.

Speaking of Camilla, I caught up with the designer prior to the night to chat about her inspirations, motivations and all of her beautiful things.

Tell me about the inspiration for the Caravanserai collection? (Great name by the way)

Thanks Laura! Basically the collection takes you on a journey around the infamous trade route – the silk road in Asia. Everything from the wildlife, to the incomparable colours of the tourmalines (which are these vibrant precious gems in all the colours of the rainbow) and the stories of the Pilgrims who travel along these routes to trade.

The name ‘caravanserai’ came from the little settlements of roadside inns along the silk road which these nomadic travellers used not only as a place to trade their gems but also to rest and recover from the days adventures.

Mixed prints are so much fun to wear – what are some tips you can give to help keep it looking put-together if someone’s trying to pair their own pieces?

The great thing about our entire ready to wear collection is that you can manipulate each garment in so many different ways to suit your own unique style or how you’re feeling that day. There are great tank tops to pair back with denim or little shorts. There are jumpsuits for those perfect summer days when you want to show off your legs a little bit. But for those days when I’m not feeling the most confident I love being able to pop on a kaftan and instantly feel sexy because there are so many ways of wearing them with a twist here and a knot there you have a completely different outfit – perfect for any occasion! My philosophy is that every woman no matter what shape or size has the right to feel beautiful.

There is a style guide on our website http://www.camilla.com.au/collections/style-guide/ to help women discover and enjoy the many different ways to wear Camilla, it shows you how to play and manipulate the fabric to create your very own signature style.

The prints themselves are amazing – can you tell me a little about the print design process?

Travel is my muse! I am inspired by anything and everything when Im travelling – from the most weird and wonderful things – from the people I meet, to the places I go and even the food I eat – everything when I travel inspires me! Often my partner will find me on the floor taking a photo of a fabulous random thing and that’s the start of a print – right there and then. Last year I was walking down a local market and was inspired by these small Russian dolls – and there you go another print in the making.

Once its time to start designing the prints I collect all my inspiration and digitally work on each image – on the colour calibrations of the image, enlarging some aspects – multiplying others, the process is all-consuming but eventually we end up with the prints of the collection! I then strike off the prints and start designing the necklines!

It’s great to see some incredible jackets and pants in the new collection. How have your customers inspired the evolution of the label?

Since launching Camilla eight years ago, the label has continually evolved. Stocking internationally from the very beginning meant it was important to cater to the northern hemisphere where denim is king – so tank tops and oversized jackets were so important to the range. With our retail stores I am largely dictated by our customers and what they want. We have created quite a nice little niche by broadening our range to include Harlem pants, jumpsuits for the tweens and smaller ladies, little shorts, tanks and of course our kaftans- with this huge ready to wear collection we are able to cater for all walks of life. My oldest customer is nearly 90 and she loves our brand as the pieces make her feel sexy and with the introduction of our children’s collection even the little ones can enjoy Camilla, so no matter who you are or how old you are– Camilla will have something to make you feel good about yourself!
